The Elephant Ear plant is a Herbaceous Perennial, meaning that they grow from non-woody stems and will re-bloom each year. Elephant Ear plants are actually part of the Caladium family. Caladiums are typically known for their bright, full colored leaves that bloom throughout the summer and part of fall. However, Elephant Ear plants are mainly solid green in color and are lacking of the brightly colored autumn colors of other Caladium plants. However, as with other Caladium plants, Elephant Ear plants are EXTREMELY easy to grow, and they will stay in bloom for a minimum of five to six months out of the year.
Growing showy, tropical "Elephant Ear" (Colocasia) plants is possible even in cold weather zones. These plants make a great showing as a backdrop or a center of interest in any garden. If temperatures average below about 40-45ºF (roughly 4-7ºC) for any extended period of time, the root system - tuber(s) - must be dug up and stored in a cool, dry place until replanted the following warm season.
